"Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicles in Your Neighborhood: A Southern California Community Workshop"

by Patrick Serfass

On September 16, 2004 the National Hydrogen Association (NHA) and California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) held “Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicles in Your Neighborhood: A Southern California Community Workshop” for fire officials, emergency responders, local permitting officials, city planners, city/county managers and administrators, public and community leaders. The event, hosted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Energy had almost 100 attendees present to learn about hydrogen and fuel cells.

Fire code officials were among those who participated in this important community workshop.

Nearly 100 community leaders, including emergency responders, city planners, code officials, and city managers participated in the workshop.
The all-day workshop began with national, state and regional overviews and then covered basic, “101-type” presentations on hydrogen and fuel cells with a question and answer period to provide basic knowledge before the afternoons more technical sessions. After the morning session, attendees met at AQMD’s new hydrogen fueling station for Ride and Drives with the latest fuel cell vehicles from DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Volkswagen. The Ride and Drive was a part of the CaFCP’s Road Rally launch which featured Terry Tamminen, Secretary of California's Environmental Protection Agency and Firoz Rasul, Chairman and CEO of Ballard Power Systems. The combined events were covered by MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.

After lunch, attendees met in two smaller concurrent sessions covering emergency response training in one and station installation requirements and the west coast rollout of ANSI’s new Codes and Standards website in the other. Both groups reported lively discussion and positive learning experiences from the smaller technical sessions.

The National Hydrogen Association holds at least two workshops per year around the U.S. for those using and developing hydrogen codes and standards.
